Care & Cleaning Instructions

Cleaning Methods for Graber Draperies:

Every drapery should come with a care label. Please refer to that first for specific instructions for your unique draperies.

Spot cleaning is not recommended for fabric window treatments. They should not be cleaned with water, club soda, soaps, or cleansers. It is recommended that all fabric products be cleaned by a professional drapery cleaner or dry cleaner with specific experience in decorative fabric window treatments.

For regular maintenance of your fabric window treatments, use the brush attachment on your vacuum and run it lightly over the treatments, including up and down the folds on draperies, to remove dust and particles. If draperies need more thorough cleaning, have them professionally cleaned.

Care & Cleaning Instructions

Cleaning Methods for Graber Cellular Shades:

Dusting and vacuuming are recommended for monthly maintenance. Cellular shades are designed to be anti-static so build-up of dust and particulate should be minimal.

✅ Dusting – To maintain a like-new appearance, dust lightly with a feather duster.

✅ Vacuuming – For deeper cleaning, lightly vacuum with the upholstery attachment of any vacuum cleaner.

✅ Spot Clean – Mild detergents– such as Woolite –spot removers, and dry cleaning may harm your cellular shades. Blot gently with a soft cloth or sponge, a mild detergent, and warm water then allow to dry completely. Be careful not to crush or wrinkle the fabric or cells of your shades.

✅ Ultrasonic Cleaning – For deep stains or soil, contact a cleaner from the certified network of ultrasonic cleaners. You can also contact us for help!

❌ Water Immersible

If for any reason an insect or other loose material ends up inside the shade, you can attempt to blow it out using short bursts from compressed air canisters, like the type designed for cleaning electronic equipment.

Care Methods for Graber Cellular Shades:

  • All cordless shades need to be operated daily in order to retain their shape and ideal function. Use two hands to pull equally across the bottom of your shade.
  • If the cells start sagging or bowing, raise the shade fully and inspect the cells to ensure they are folding correctly. Leave in fully raised position for 48-72 hours to help “retrain” the shape of the cells.

Cleaning Methods for Graber Natural Shades:

✅ Dusting – To maintain a like-new appearance, dust lightly with a feather duster.

✅ Vacuuming – Occasional light vacuuming with a brush attachment will help keep shades clean.

❌ Spot Clean – DO NOT use water or liquid cleaners.

❌ Ultrasonic Cleaning – Ultrasonic and dry cleaning is not recommended.

❌ Water Immersible

Cleaning Methods for Graber Roller & Solar Shades:

To avoid permanent creasing, use extra care when cleaning blackout fabrics.

✅ Dusting – To maintain a like-new appearance, dust lightly with a feather duster.

✅ Vacuuming – Lightly vacuum fabric with an upholstery attachment.

✅ Spot Clean – Blot gently with a soft cloth or sponge, a mild detergent, and warm water then blot gently and allow to dry completely.  Mild detergents– such as Woolite –spot removers, and dry cleaning may harm your shades. Do not use strong detergents or spot removers.

❌ Ultrasonic Cleaning – Ultrasonic and dry cleaning is not recommended.

❌ Water Immersible

Cleaning Methods for Graber Pleated Shades:

✅ Dusting – To maintain a like-new appearance, dust lightly with a feather duster.

✅ Vacuuming – For deeper cleaning, lightly vacuum with the upholstery attachment of any vacuum cleaner.

❌ Spot Clean

❌ Ultrasonic Cleaning

❌ Water Immersible

Remove the shade from its window; open it and lay out on a clean, flat surface. Do not use strong detergents or spot removers.

  • To clean fingerprints or soiled spots, use an aerosol spray foam upholstery or fabric cleaner, such as Woolite® or ScotchGard® upholstery cleaners.
  • Spray the foam cleaner over the entire area to be cleaned. Immediately scrub the area with a clean, damp sponge (back and forth gently in the direction parallel to the pleats in the fabric) until stains are removed. Be careful not to crush or wrinkle the fabric.
  • Remove excess water from the fabric by patting with a clean, dry towel. Hang the shade when completely dry.
  • Frequent cleaning may tend to remove the fullness and body of the pleated fabric.

Cleaning Methods for Graber Sheer & Layered Shades:

✅ Dusting – Dust regularly with a feather duster, vacuum with low suction or blow away dust with a hair dryer on a cool setting. Static may occur in dry conditions. If the front and back panels appear to cling together, an anti-static product (such as Static Guard®*) may be used to eliminate the static buildup. (*Static Guard® is a registered trademark of B&G Foods North America, Inc.)

✅ Vacuuming – For deeper cleaning, lightly vacuum with the upholstery attachment of any vacuum cleaner.

Care for SunSetter EasyShades:

There is no special care and maintenance for SunSetter EasyShades. If you close the EasyShade while the fabric is wet we recommend opening the EasyShade the next sunny day to allow the fabric to dry completely to prevent mildew from forming. The fabric itself is mildew resistant but mildew can form on dirt, pollen, etc. that may be present on the fabric.

Troubleshooting (non-motorized)

If you have our cordless Smart Pull shade, please DOWNLOAD THE GUIDE TO SMART PULLS which includes some adjustment options.

Note: Any reinstallation/installation should be done by Galaxy Draperies or an authorized Graber dealer in order to not void your warranty. Please contact us with any questions.

While uncommon, occasionally air can become trapped between cells which creates an uneven look in the raised shade. Simply operate the shade a few times, opening and closing slowly, to correct the fabric orientation.

If the material of your shade appears to be billowing out when you’ve lowered the top portion, this is usually caused by the bottom rail resting on the windowsill. This creates slack in the cords.

Simply raise the bottom rail slightly off the windowsill to retain tension, lock into place, then try lowering the top again!

Lower your shade until the bottom rail is almost but not quite touching the window sill. Lock into place. This retains tension on the cords by not allowing it to rest on the windowsill.

Lower the midrail all the way down, ensuring the cords are taut. Make sure the handles, if you have two, are as far apart as you can comfortably reach.

Raise the midrail again, carefully ensuring even force is applied to both handles simultaneously so the rail stays level.

If you only have one handle, you can do this process while simply ensuring the rail stays level. If it continues to be a problem, a second handle may be added to the bottom of your shade to ensure an even raise.

While uncommon, occasionally air can become trapped between cells which creates an uneven look in the raised shade. This usually happens if the shade is raised too fast.

To remedy this, slowly lower your shade as far as you can, then slowly raise it again. You can do this multiple times if needed. If that still does not work, adjust the position of your hands to make sure it is being raised and lowered evenly.

Lastly, you can also open the shade only halfway and repeat the process if needed. If all else fails, a second handle may be added to the bottom of your shade to help ensure an even raise.

Z-Wave: My batteries are draining too fast

The battery life of your motorized shades is a highly dependent on several factors:

  • Size of shade and weight of fabric. Larger, heavier shades consume more energy when operated.
  • How often the shade is operated. The more frequently shades are operated, the more energy they consume.
  • Type and quality of batteries used. We recommend Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries for best performance.
  • Correct battery orientation. Often, a motorized shade will operate even if one of the batteries is installed backwards, but battery life is significantly reduced.
  • Temperature of environment where batteries are installed. Excessively hot or cold environments tend to deplete batteries more rapidly.
  • How frequent the shade’s radio is active. While active, the shade’s radio consumes power, so the radios are OFF more than ON. While uncommon, other systems’ radios may “wake” the motor’s radio, consuming more power.

Given an average size shade, with average weight fabric, using our recommended batteries, properly installed, and operated once up and once down per day, batteries should last approximately a year. If your battery performance is significantly less (demonstrated over multiple sets of batteries), contact customer service.

Another possibility could be the shade may be in an unintended always listening mode, not allowing the motor to go to sleep. By excluding the shades from their primary controller and including them again, this will turn off the always listening mode. Please use these steps to remove the shade from always listening mode.

Care & Cleaning Instructions

From SunSetter Awnings, 2021

Standard Maintenance for SunSetter Woven Acrylic Fabrics

SunSetter woven acrylic fabrics are made of 100% solution-dyed acrylic fiber and have a special finish with delays the formation and accumulation of dirt. To preserve this finish, cleaning of the fabric must include the following:

  • Thoroughly remove dust and dry the awning fabric by vacuum cleaning, gently beating, or brushing.
  • Clean your awning regularly with mild soap and water while gently brushing. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use caustic cleaners.

If it is necessary to roll up the awning while it’s wet, make sure to extend it out to dry when the weather is better. While the awning fabric itself won’t mildew, note that mildew can form on the dust and dirt allowed to accumulate on the fabric. If the fabric is rolled up and stored when wet, the moisture will promote the formation of mildew.

You can contact us to purchase a SunSetter Cleaning & Maintenance kit too! It contains an approved cleaning solution, fabric repair kit, a bottle of touch-up paint for hardware, and a scrub brush with a telescoping handle.

For Stubborn Stains

For more stubborn cases, a general solution of no more than 1/4 cup (4 oz.) of bleach and 1/4th cup (2 oz.) of mild soap per gallon of water is normally recommended. Do not leave this mixture on the fabric for more than 20 minutes. The fabric should then be thoroughly rinsed with cold water to remove all of the mixture.

CAUTION: Bleach can deteriorate sewing threads. The fabric should be thoroughly rinsed with cold water to remove all the soap. This method of cleaning may remove part of the water repellency of the fabric. Therefore, if water repellency is important, the fabric afterwards should receive an application of any air-curing fluorocarbon water repellent treatment, such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard. (For instructions, see Fabric Finish / Waterproofing under Troubleshooting – Non-Motorized.)

From SunSetter Awnings, 2021

Your SunSetter awning contains extruded and die-case aluminum components. These aluminum parts are powder-coated for long lasting beauty. If you need touch up paint, you can contact us to purchase a SunSetter Cleaning & Maintenance kit too! It contains an approved cleaning solution, fabric repair kit, a bottle of touch-up paint for hardware, and a scrub brush with a telescoping handle.

Once per year, you may wish to lubricate the plastic bushing on the Roller Bar on the side opposite the Motor or gear crank unit. During extended use, dust may accumulate on this moving part and may cause a minor squeak as awning opens and closes. Any type of light lubricant will eliminate this type of noise. You may also wish the lubricate the pivot point on the lateral arm elbows. The plastic handles of the crank wand can be lubricated with a small amount of light lubricant, to address squeaking that may occur.

From Sunbrella®, 2021

Standard Maintenance for SunSetter/Sunbrella® Fabric

One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabrics looking good is to hose fabrics off on a monthly basis with clean water. This helps prevent dirt from becoming deeply embedded in the fabric and eliminates the need for more frequent vigorous cleaning. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years.

When it’s time for a thorough cleaning, Sunbrella fabrics can be cleaned while still on an awning frame or, size permitting, they can be removed to aid in the cleaning of stubborn stains or for professional cleaning.

General or Light Cleaning

To clean Sunbrella while still on an awning frame:
  • Brush off loose dirt.
  • Hose down.
  • Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid.
  • Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
  • Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
  • Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
  • Air dry.
  • May not require re-treatment depending on the age of the fabric.

If stubborn spills persist, you can use a diluted bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning of mildew. For roof run-off or other similar spills a strong degreaser may be required. Specific information on spill cleaning is available in our Cleaning Guide.

Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn Stains and Mildew

Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean stubborn stains:

  • Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of clean water.
  • Allow mixture to soak into fabric for up to 15 minutes.
  • Clean with soft bristle brush. Note: This step should be avoided when cleaning the coated side (back side) of Sunbrella Plus, Supreme, or Clarity.
  • Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
  • Air dry.
  • Repeat if necessary.
  • Re-treatment of fabric for water and stain resistance will be necessary after using bleach solution.

Note: Use caution when cleaning the coated (underside) of Sunbrella Plus, Supreme, or Clarity with the recommended bleach solution. The coated side of the fabric should only be sprayed with the recommended bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly.

Retreating Sunbrella Fabrics

Sunbrella fabrics are engineered to provide long-term performance. After repeated thorough cleanings, or years of use and exposure, you may choose to refresh your fabrics with an appropriate retreating agent. We recommend 303® Fabric Guard™, available in the United States, and Tex’Aktiv, available internationally.

Applying a retreatment:
  • Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods outlined.
  • Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
  • Apply retreatment in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.

303 High Tech Fabric Guard should be applied to SunSetter woven acrylic fabrics after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the original finish and reduces the fabric’s water repellency.

  • Allow the clean fabric to air dry completely.
  • Apply 303 in a well ventilated area following instructions on the container.
  • Apply 303 in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely.
  • Apply a second thin, even coating of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating. A 15 ounce bottle provides coverage of up to 50 square feet of fabric.)

Troubleshooting (motorized)

Please note you might have to replace the battery after 3 years, or if the Remote Transmitter stops working.

Test the Remote Transmitter by holding a button down. The LED should flash for at least 5 seconds.

You should find this type of battery (3V Lithium CR2430) in any local hardware store. To replace the battery, simply remove the small Phillips screw on the back of the Remote Transmitter, remove the back cover, replace the old battery and reinstall the back cover and Phillips screw. Be sure to note the orientation of the old battery as you remove it.

DOWNLOAD OUR QUICK GUIDE TO TROUBLESHOOTING your remote for your motorized awning or LED lights!

A common reason an awning can stop working is an overload of the electrical system on a GFCI outlet. This can happen because the circuit your awning is plugged into is tripped by too many things running at once, or was overloaded in some fashion. If anything plugged into that same or nearby outlets on the same circuit also doesn’t work, this is the most likely culprit. Simply pushing a button on the outlet to reset it may restore functionality to the awning and the outlet it is plugged into. However if the outlet is pulling too many amps or this happens regularly, a certified electrician will need to examine the wiring and the circuit’s load.

It could also be that your awning’s remote simply isn’t on the right channel! See “Basic Troubleshooting for Awning Remote or LEDs” for instructions.
