Why are they blackout drapes and not blackout curtains?
Here at Galaxy Draperies, we don’t sell curtains. We design draperies. The difference is something our CEO Rick Baker is very passionate about. Draperies are our passion – it’s in our name!
Curtains are sold as panels in precut sizes. If you’ve purchased a pair of curtains from a store that come together in a package with set sizes to choose from, you’re familiar with curtains.
Draperies are custom made for your home, your window, your style and your needs.
Custom drapes (draperies and drapes are interchangeable words) are going to be made after your windows are measured carefully by an expert. You will be able to choose everything from the fabric, liners, the pleats that create their shape, and even how full they are. When it comes to blackout drapes, ensuring there’s as little gap around the window as possible is necessary. This requires measurements by a professional who understands how far out they need to come from the sides of the window, as well as an understanding of hardware that will keep them as close to the wall as possible to avoid gaps.

How to Stop Light Leaking out the Top of my Drapes
While draperies make a huge difference in blocking out light, by design there may still be light that leaks out the top. There are a few easy options to stop the leak and get some sleep.
Recessed tracks are a specialty design, usually planned in advance when the home is built. They allow the hardware for your draperies to be hidden in a small grove along the ceiling. Along with a sleek, modern look with zero visible hardware, any light that would leak out the top is never truly seen within the room. It’s merely hidden in the small gap with the track!
Another option is custom top treatments such as a cornice. This wood or fabric-covered wood frame looks absolutely beautiful. It creates a finishing touch above your window that can make it look taller and the design more complete. It also creates a literal box of beauty that hides the hardware and captures any escaping light. They’re a great solution for ensuring as close to total blackout as possible!
