Top Window Treatment Trends for 2021
We can probably all acknowledge that 2020 was an experience like no other. This was the year we all learned how to bake, started practicing yoga in our living rooms, and became plant parents. It was also the year we learned about the importance of our homes and rethought how we decorated them. That’s why, now that the year is over, interior designers are making predictions for the top upcoming design trends of 2021.
At Galaxy Draperies, we’ve been making some predictions of our own. Based on what we’ve seen this year, and the popular décor styles coming next year, here are some window treatment trends for 2021:
Trend #1: For Comforting, Homey Spaces
We all spent so much time in our homes in 2020, it should come as no surprise that comforting décor styles have become more popular. Cottagecore design—and its slightly classier cousins, vintage and rustic vogue—have reigned supreme this year and will probably feature predominantly in design trends next year as well. These styles feature traditional, overstuffed furniture in muted or pastel palettes with vintage prints and motifs.
So, where do window coverings fit into this trend? Well, if you’re looking to go cottagecore in your home, you can try:
- Fabric curtains in traditional fabrics
- Relaxed or London fold Roman shades
- Painted white shutters
You can also pair pastel or muted top treatments and draperies with more minimalistic window treatments like white or cream-colored blinds.
Trend #2: For Tranquil, Beachy Spaces
After the year we’ve had, I think we all want to relax a little bit at home. That’s why beachy décor styles—with lighter woods, neutral fabrics, and walls in shades of aqua—are becoming more popular in 2021. This kind of décor pairs naturally with window coverings like:
- Natural woven shades
- Window shades made from thick-woven fabrics like linen
- White or pale wooden shutters
When purchasing window treatments for your beachy room, try to keep them simpler and more relaxed in order to turn your home into a retreat.
Trend #3: For Bold, Earthen Spaces
When choosing the color of the year, Sherwin Williams, Dulux, and Pantone all selected bold, earthen tones. This pairs well with a growing push in 2021 towards natural, sustainable décor that features plenty of wooden, woven, and rattan accessories.
You have plenty of options when it comes to window coverings that complement earthen, natural spaces. For example, you can choose:
- Fabric window shades in featuring lighter hues (to offset the bold-colored walls)
- Natural woven shades, which serve as an anchoring element in your space
- Wood window blinds featuring warm finishes
The trick to choosing window treatments for earthen spaces is finding options that complement your décor without disappearing in it. If your living or dining room features bold, color-of-the-year walls, try choosing lighter window coverings. If, on the other hand, your bedroom or office features neutral walls, try brown, rust-colored, warm green fabric shades.
Trend #5: For Eye-Catching, Stylish Spaces
On the other end of the spectrum from our relaxing or natural styles, you have grandmillenial décor making a splash in 2021. These spaces incorporate fun or flashy elements you’d expect to see in your grandparents’ house, like colorful and overstuffed furniture with a timeless look.
When choosing window coverings for a grandmillenial home, try:
- Fabric shades or curtains in colorful patterns
- Relaxed and tulip-style Roman shades
- Elegant drapery
